Ruby Rowena Garner

Ruby Rowena Garner, 94, of the Sugar Grove community near Booneville, was born Dec. 12, 1919 in Ione, to William E. and Ruth Lee Pennington Smith. She went home to be in Heaven on Sunday Feb. 23, 2014 in Booneville.

Rowena attended the Ione Public School through the eighth grade. She graduated Booneville High School in 1938. She was the last surviving member of her graduating class. After graduation Rowena helped her parents run the Ione Store. She married Pleas Garner on Nov. 15, 1941 and moved to Sugar Grove where she lived the next 72 years — the last 69 in the same house.

Rowena was a wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker, farmer, school bus driver and a Logan County courthouse worker.

She had been a member of the Ione Baptist Church since she was a teenager, however she attended the Sugar Grove Assembly of God Church near her home for many years. She was a faithful member of the Logan County Home Economist for over 70 years.

Rowena loved sewing, crocheting, gardening, and visiting with her friends and family. She had a long list of friends who faithfully received a birthday card and or a birthday phone call each year.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Pleas Garner; her parents, Will and Ruth Smith; three sisters, Eunice Smith Harwell, Melba Smith Jones, and Mary Ruth Smith; five brothers, Hubert, Earl, Paul, Ray, and Penn Smith; maternal grandparents, William Jordan and Martha Savannah Pennington; and paternal grandparents, Thomas Wright Smith and Julia Cantrell Smith.

Rowena is survived by two daughters, Mary Garner Lewis of Little Rock and Charlene Garner Watts and husband Bill of San Antonio, Texas; one son, Bill Garner and wife Cary of Booneville; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014 at Roberts Memorial Chapel with burial in Garner-Davis Cemetery near Booneville, under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday evening at Roberts Funeral Home.
