Wayne Nelms

Wayne Nelms, 85, of Fort Smith, passed from this life March 19, 2014 in Fort Smith. He was born April 2, 1928, in Booneville, to the late Newton Nelms and Mary (Bea) Calvin.

Wayne retired, with the rank of Master Sergeant, from the United States Air Force with over 21 years of service. After retiring from the Air Force, he went to work for Sparks Hospital and retired as the supervisor of the Bio-Med shop and over 20 years of employment. He was the treasurer for the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He loved all outdoor activities, hunting and fishing, but his passion was hiking Mount Magazine with his wife Mayrene. Wayne was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Mayrene; his daughter, Cathy Jones and her husband Jeff of Greenwood; his son, Larry Nelms and his wife Shirley of Booneville; three grandchildren, Jason Nelms, Cara Heard and Leslie Chastain; three great-grandchildren, Griffin Heard, Lily Chastain and Madison Hall; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Wayne is preceded in death by a grandson, James Hall; two brothers, Chester and Guy Nelms; and a sister, Oleta ‘Sis’ Porter.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, March 24, 2014 at Fort Smith National Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2013 at Edwards Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Jones, Larry Nelms, Harold Stewart, Gary Hamilton and Jimmy Lee Didier.

The family would like to thank Willow Brook Senior Living, Methodist Nursing Home and Sparks Regional Medical Center for the care given to Wayne.
