Matt Berry ran 61 yards for a touchdown and caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Cody Harrel with 23 seconds left in the first half to lead the Booneville Bearcats to a 21-7 win over Star City in nonconference play Friday night at Bearcat Stadium.
Booneville finishes nonconference play with a 3-0 record. Star City falls to 2-1.
Berry’s 61-yard touchdown run came at the 8:00 mark of the opening quarter — both teams had gone three-and-out on their initial possessions. Berry finished with 108 yards.
Booneville made it 14-0 when Harrel got loose for a 30-yard touchdown run with 4:34 to go in the first quarter and the score would be unchanged until the Harrel to Berry touchdown.
A Bryson May interception and return of 29 yards gave the Bearcats the ball at the Bulldog 42 in the final minute of the half. Harrel hit Michael Springs for 16 and then Berry for the touchdown to make it 21-0. Harrel was 3-of-5 passing on the night for 59 yards on the night.
The Bearcats had one more chance before halftime after a Damon May fumble recovery on the ensuing kickoff, but Harrel was sacked and threw an interception on the final two plays of the half.
Star City stopped Bryson May on a third quarter fourth down — May was held to 54 yards on 24 carries — then put together a 59-yard scoring drive that Tye Brown capped with a 1-yard sneak to make it 21-7.
Otherwise, Brown had a rough night, hitting on only 13-of-35 passes with two interceptions and he was sacked three times, losing a fumble on one by Dalton Gray.
