Hitting the hole. Magazine quarterback Charly Moua runs through an opening created by his offensive line Friday. Moua ran for 90 yards and a touchdown in the 19-7 win.
Late in the first half of a 7-7 game at home Friday night the Magazine Rattlers were backed up to their own 1 and Union Christian had a first down.
The Rattlers managed to get to the half with the game still tied as Cheenew Yang made a stop for a 5-yard loss, Abraham Dority made a stop at the 1 again and Alex Elkins led a negative yardage stop on the final play of the half.
With a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns Magazine (3-1, 2-0 Conference 2A-4) went on to claim a 19-7 win in a game in which they ran 71 offensive plays.
Running the ball on 68 of those plays the Rattlers won for the third straight week. Billy Yang led the way with 26 carries for 114 yards and the quarterback tandem of Charly Moua and Dority accounted for 29 more carries – Moua 15 for 90 and Dority 14 for 60.
It was Billy Yang who capped a 10-play drive – he carried on half of those plays – to give Magazine a 13-7 lead with 4:23 remaining in the game. Head coach Doug Powell then decided to go for two, but Dority was stopped well short.
A Billy Yang interception led to a 19-yard run by Moua to put the game away, although the point after attempt went awry.
Union would end the second half the same way they did the first half, deep in Rattler territory, but with nothing to show for it as the clock expired with the ball at the Magazine 8.
Union Christian (2-2, 2-1), which ran 55 plays, managed to get that far by the arm of quarterback Brandon Smith, who was 19-of-43 on the night for 252 yards and the lone Eagle score.
Magazine scored the first time they had the ball but the Rattlers would not score again until the final quarter.
The initial scoring drive featured a fumble that Moua picked up and was culminated when Caleb Shelton went 30 yards for the score. Layton Robinson’s point after made it 7-0 with 6:09 to go in the first quarter.
UCA drew even in short order going 67 yards in six plays. Smith hit Will Calloway for the touchdown from 31 yards out and it was 7-7 with 4:29 to play in the quarter.
Magazine kept the ball the rest of the quarter but turned the ball over on downs two plays into the second quarter at the Union 21.
The Eagles then had three straight negative yardage plays as Dority got a sack on a to-be reverse pass, Robinson threw a receiver for a five yard loss and Lee Simmers came up with another sack.
Starting from the Eagle 46 after a punt the Rattlers got one first down but ran out of downs.
A possession later the Rattlers fumbled and Union used a 37- and 24-yard Smith to Callaway plays to get to the Rattler 1.
Magazine fumbled on their first second half possession but got the ball back on an interception by Jesse Canada.
The Rattlers would punt after that possession and lost another fumble before the go-ahead drive.
Friday the Rattlers will be on the road at Hector. The Wildcats are 4-1 on the season – Hector played twice in the first week of the season – and are the only other unbeaten team in 2A-4 play at 3-0 after an spanking Western Yell County 43-7 Friday.
