Loud and clear. Bryson May (21) scores his first of two first half touchdowns to go along with a stellar first half defensively in a 35-7 win over Hamburg Friday.

Known more for his play at fullback this season, Bryson May owned the first half against Hamburg from his linebacker position as the Bearcats beat the Lions 35-14 in the second round of the Class 4A state football playoffs at Bearcat Stadium.

May recovered a fumble on the second play of the game to set up a Josh Smith touchdown run. With the Lions at the Bearcat 21 on the ensuing possession, May intercepted a fourth down pass to end the threat.

The Bearcats (12-0) also scored on that ensuing possession to make it 14-0 against a team that had surrendered only 12 first quarter points this season. They would make it 21-0 before the quarter ended.

May also wasn’t exactly shut out at fullback, running 10 times for 41 yards and scoring twice as the Bearcats led 28-0 at the intermission.

For the night May recorded a team best 1.5 tackles for loss and led the Bearcats in tackles.

Though May was bottled up Matt Berry ran 8 times for 102 yards, Cody Harrel added 12 for 90, Josh Smith added six for 60 and Justin Shackleford five for 50. Harrel ran for two touchdowns and Shackleford one.

Hamburg (9-3) scored twice in the fourth quarter on a 22-yard John Wilson touchdown run and a pass play from Timothy Morris to Deandre Rachal covering 29 yards.

The Bearcats earned a post Thanksgiving day game for the second straight season with Friday’s win. Booneville will host Lincoln, a 41-21 winner at Malvern Friday.
