Cody Simpson was 3-for-3, stole two bases, scored a run and knocked in another as the Bearcats beat Maumelle 5-2 Saturday to advance to the district tournament finals.
Seeded second after closing the regular season with a win over Conference 4A-4 champion Dover, the Bearcats were assured of a trip to the Class 4A North regional set to start this weekend and did not play at all last week until the 6:30 p.m. game Saturday night.
The Bearcats scored single runs in the first through third innings and added a couple of insurance runs in the sixth.
In the first Dalton Herrera singled with one out and eventually touched home. James Ray had a double in the inning.
Simpson singled, swiped second and scored on Matt Berry’s single with two down in the second to make it 2-0.
The Bearcats scored without a hit in the third when Cody Harrel drew a leadoff walk and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
Simpson singled and was stranded after stealing second in the fourth but he followed Jacob Krepps to the plate after Krepps got a run home and made it 5-0 with his third hit of the day. Wolski and Ray had started the sixth with back to back singles.
Wolski (7-0) was touched for a pair of seventh inning triples that both plated single runs before the senior recorded his 11th strike out to end it.
